When is the last time you updated your home inventor y list? Do you even have an inventory list? Surprisingly, many homeowners do not! Sounds like it is time for a New Year project! Our Texas insurance agency encourages the making of a home inventory list, and with good reason. Having this list will come in handy when you go to file a home insurance claim.
For those who do not know where to start, allow us to help.
• Never tackle the entire house in one day. Each day, choose a different room to focus on.
• Instead of actually writing out the list, use an Excel spreadsheet. This will make it much easier to document and organize. Just make sure you back it up!
• Record as much information as possible for each object. This includes: serial number, color, price, store you purchased it from, make, model, etc.
• Take a picture of the item to accompany the list.
• Not into documenting? Use a video recorder and walk through your house while narrating!
• Check out inventory software if you are computer-savvy.
Once your home inventory list is complete, put it in a safe place. Now, it is your responsibility to constantly update this list as you add to your home’s valuables! Adding one by one is much easier than doing it all at once.
The next time you have to file a home insurance claim, you will be able to recite this information back to your adjuster with ease, making it easier for you to get the money you need. Our Texas insurance agency swears by these lists- it will make your life and our job much easier!
